GAZA, PALESTINE - AUGUST 5, 2025: Israeli forces once again opened fire on Palestinians gathered near an aid distribution point in the Gaza Valley region on Tuesday. The deliberate and targeted attack resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed. The victims were among hundreds of civilians waiting for desperately needed humanitarian assistance in the area already suffering from extreme shortages of food, water, and medical supplies due to Israel’s ongoing blockade and genocide. Despite the risk of death, some Palestinians managed to access the aid. Abdurrahman al-Jarousha, present at the site, said he arrived early in the morning and waited under gunfire to obtain basic provisions. He described the food as “a morsel of death,” underscoring the life-threatening dangers faced by those seeking assistance. The Health Ministry said that 52 Palestinians were killed and 352 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the past day, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 1,568, with over 11,230 others wounded since May 27. The ministry also said that eight more people died from starvation and malnutrition over the past day, pushing the death toll since October 2023 to 188, including 94 children. Since May 27, a US- and Israeli-backed aid scheme in Gaza has been widely criticized as being ineffective as well as being a “death trap” for starving civilians. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 61,000 Palestinians, almost half of them women and children. Israel’s military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
