Demonstrators gathered in front of the parliament building, threw red paint and flour at the entrance, symbolizing blood and starvation, while chanting slogans condemning genocide in Gaza. Several protesters were detained by police after refusing to comply with orders to disperse. The protest coincided with a special parliamentary session interrupted from summer recess to address the growing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Israel has been facing mounting outrage over its destructive war on Gaza, where more than 61,200 people have been killed since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
