Floods covered driveways as heavy rains triggered a catastrophic deluge that killed at least four in Tennessee.

Footage recorded by Wendy King shows floodwater swamping the streets in Chattanooga on August 12.

Authorities said 6.42 inches of rain fell, marking the second wettest day on record since 1879.

At least four people were killed, including a family of three whose car was struck by a collapsing tree in East Ridge. Another casualty was swept away by the raging waters.

Major highways, including Interstate 24, were shut down. Local authorities declared a state of emergency, and multiple rescues were carried out across the city.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he and his wife were praying for those affected by the floods.

He said: 'Maria Lee & I are praying for all Tennesseans impacted by significant flooding in Hamilton County. I thank local law enforcement & first responders for their quick action & urge Tennesseans to use caution, heed warnings & monitor the weather forecast.

'I also commend myTDOT for mobilising their emergency service crews swiftly to assist Tennesseans & reopen roads as quickly & safely as possible after record flooding in the area.'
