Chinese tourist arrested for 'attacking airport staff' in Malaysia
A Chinese tourist was arrested for allegedly attacking airport staff over a passport dispute in Malaysia.
Fang Fu Yuan, 31, was going through immigration checks at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) when an officer flagged her and her family over missing entry records.
Officer Nordiana Atira Shafinas Abdul Rahman asked her to step aside to wait for a review, but Fang reportedly pulled the woman's headscarf and shoved her face against a pillar.
The attack on August 13 left her with head trauma, soft tissue injuries, soreness, and swelling on her face.
The Malaysian Border Security Agency (AKPS) soon arrived at the departure terminal to control the rampaging mother-of-two at 7:40 pm local time.
They said in a statement: 'A minor struggle ensued and the suspect refused to calm down despite being instructed. AKPS enforcement officers then called the Aviation Security Team (AVSEC) to control the situation.'
Fang was then hauled away by the KLIA Criminal Investigation Division team a 9:45 pm. She was detained for 'obstructing a public servant, injuring a public servant, and using criminal force against a public servant'.
Fang's defence lawyers pleaded for leniency, saying she was a young mother of two children aged one and five. They added that she had no previous criminal record and acted out of a 'misunderstanding and communication problem'.
However, prosecutors pushed for a harsher punishment to serve as a deterrent sentence.
Deputy public prosecutor Luvithaa Veerasan said: 'Even if the accused acted out of emotion, her actions injured a public servant. The court must send a clear message that such offences are unacceptable in society.'
The Sepang Magistrate Court sentenced Fang to one month in prison from August 13, and a fine of 2,000 RM (350 GBP).
Fang was described as calm as the sentence was read out to her in Mandarin by a court interpreter.
