Gaza Strip: Hamas agrees to mediators-presented Gaza ceasefire proposal
Hamas movement and other Palestinian factions have announced their agreement to the Gaza ceasefire proposal presented by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, a Hamas statement said on Monday. The ceasefire proposal includes an initial 60-day truce, the release of hostages, and the entry of urgent humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. On the same day, an Israeli official confirmed to The Times of Israel that Israel had received Hamas' latest response regarding the Gaza ceasefire proposal and the release of hostages. The last ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, part of a phased agreement that included the release of hostages, was ended by Israel in March. Israel's offensive and blockade of Gaza have left much of the territory in ruins and created famine. At least 62,004 people have been killed since the war began in October 2023, according to Gaza's health authorities. Deaths from starvation are rising daily, health officials said. As of Monday, at least 263 people, including 112 children, have died of hunger in Gaza. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and rejected any reoccupation of the territory, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency. The two leaders met in Cairo as Egypt hosted indirect talks between Hamas and Israel on a potential truce. During their discussion, both leaders reviewed the joint efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to secure a ceasefire and ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid. They also "categorically" rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land, the statement said. They also emphasized that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is the only path to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. SHOTLIST: FILE: Gaza Strip - May 6, 2025 1.
