Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip have endured harsh conditions that compel them to shoulder burdens beyond their capacity, as the war exposes them to extreme danger and loss while forcing them to provide for both their own needs and those of their families. More than one million Palestinian girls and women are facing mass famine, compounded by abuse and violence that place them under constant threat. Repeated displacement, the loss of loved ones, and the destruction of shelter have left them in unbearable conditions. "There are more than 12,000 female martyrs in the Gaza Strip since the events of October 7. Women also suffer from starvation and a lack of health services, psychological support, and the basic logistical needs of household responsibilities, which they are required to provide at all levels -- whether food, water, cleaning, or personal hygiene," said Nasser Sharayah, director of the executive office for refugees in Ramallah, in the West Bank. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) raised this issue in a report on the suffering of girls and women in Gaza, highlighting their need to adopt increasingly dangerous survival strategies to make a living amid extremely limited access to resources. "The special needs of women cannot be met under this siege and starvation, and all the necessities that women require are completely non-existent. Therefore, this is a systematic method to humiliate the Palestinian people and force them to emigrate from Gaza, which is, of course, called voluntary emigration, but it is forced emigration, emigration under danger," said Mohammed Alian, a coordinator from a refugee camp committee in Ramallah. Despite their own needs, women and girls are forced to work hard to support their families, exposing them to the constant risk of being killed. "However, the lack of all these basic needs at home, within the family, and in society in general in the Gaza Strip affects the role of women inside the home, who are unable to secure even the most basic personal needs due to the closure of the crossings and the failure to provide these needs for themselves and their families," Sharayah said. The suffering of Palestinian women -- burdened with rising responsibilities amid the ongoing war -- demands urgent international action to uphold UN resolutions on women's rights and confront a challenge that now threatens the lives of more than one million girls and women in Gaza.
