Locals joined growing protests in Indonesia over allegedly lavish perks granted to government officials.

Furious demonstrators gathered on Thursday following reports that 580 members of the House of Representatives have been receiving a monthly housing benefit of 50 million rupiah (GBP 2,270) since September 2024, nearly 10 times Jakarta's minimum wage.

The activists demanded an end to what they describe as excessive bonuses paid in addition to legislators' salaries.

Footage shows a large crowd, including students and teachers, assembling outside the parliamentary complex on Thursday.

Later that night, a riot police van struck a fallen protester during clashes in the Pejompongan area.

The tactical unit was speeding down the highway with its lights and sirens activated when it collided with a demonstrator who had fallen while running ahead.

The crowd, enraged by the incident, began attacking the vehicle involved.

Local media reported that at least one other person was struck by a police riot truck and was later pronounced dead.
