China: China installs first offshore booster station with weather radar
Storyline: China installs first offshore booster station with weather radar [Voice_over] A booster station with radar equipment has been installed at the Dafeng offshore wind farm in east China’s Jiangsu Province. The station, developed by the China Three Gorges Corporation, is responsible for transmitting power from the wind turbines to the onshore control center, and is often referred to as the "heart" of offshore wind farms because of the vital role it plays. CTGC officials say the station is equipped with an S-band dual polarization radar system with a resolution of more than 62 meters and a monitoring radius of about 230 kilometers. The information gathered by the radar can be used to adjust the wind turbine blades in real time. [Sound_bite] Li Tao, executive president, China Three Gorges Corporation Jiangsu branch: "Through the precise monitoring with the meteorological radar, operators can adjust blade angles in advance based on wind conditions, improving wind energy utilization and increasing power output by three to five percent. It also enables early warnings of severe convective weather one to three hours ahead, potentially extending the annual effective maintenance window period by 30 percent. In the future, it will further enhance its role of coordination, providing strong support for the safe and stable operation of offshore wind power projects." [Voice_over] The 800-megawatt offshore wind power project in Dafeng is the country’s furthest away from land. Officials from CTGC say it was successfully connected to the power grid in early July.
