Villagers were stunned after spotting rare giant bamboo shoots that were bigger than a human leg.

The unusually thick plants, identified as the black asper variety, were discovered sprouting in a farmer's garden in Phayao, Thailand.

Footage shows locals measuring the massive shoots, which were far larger than the normal bamboo typically found in the area.

They measured it by comparing the thickness with the palm of their hands before harvesting some of the shoots.

The farmer later cut two of them, proudly showing off their weight and fresh scent, noting that despite their unusual size, they remained perfectly normal and healthy.

He said: ‘I have been cultivating the black clumps for many years, but they have never produced as many or as large shoots as this year.

‘My exceptional harvest can be attributed to continuous rain and high humidity, which made the bamboo particularly healthy.'

The resident added that the shoots are in high demand in the market, as buyers prefer them for their better taste and larger size.

Bamboo shoots are considered an important economic crop in Thailand and several parts of Southeast Asia during the rainy season.

They have a sweet and crispy texture but are also highly nutritious. They are rich in dietary fibre, vitamins, and various minerals, while also being low in calories.

Giant black asper bamboo is native to Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It is one of the largest bamboo species in the world.
