Fire rips through 'poorest slum' Happyland in Manila
This is the dramatic moment a massive ripped through the poorest slum in the Philippine capital Manila.
Drone footage shows the inferno engulfing hundreds of wooden shacks in the 'Happyland' area of Tondo district, at 12:31 am local time on Sunday.
Authorities said at least 28 firetrucks were dispatched to the area.
The blaze, which broke out at 8 pm on Saturday, was extinguished at 6:02 am on Sunday. Officials said three people suffered minor injuries.
Senior Fire Inspector Ronald Lim, Station 1 Commander of the Manila Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), said: 'The houses were made of light materials and some of them were junk shops, so the fire spread quickly.'
The BFP-National Capital Region said some 1,000 individuals were affected and 1.5 million PHP (19,928 GBP) of property was damaged.
The Manila Department of Social Welfare has set up temporary shelters for the families left homeless by the fire.
It comes just a month after flames tore through the same neighbourhood just a month earlier, displacing some 700 families.
Manila's Tondo district is among the most densely populated urban areas of the world, marked by poverty, informal settlements, and high crime rates. The overcrowded squatter settlements are filled with hovels made of wood and corrugated metal, exacerbating fire risks.
Of the slums in the district, Happyland - a filthy residential area of around 12,000 people nestled in rubbish heaps - is considered the poorest. Its name is believed to have come from the Visayan word 'hapilan' which means garbage dump.
