Two children narrowly escaped from their home when it collapsed after heavy rain in Indonesia.

The schoolgirls were attending online classes on their phones when they heard loud cracking noises coming from the walls of the house in Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday.

The terrified kids fled just as the roof came crashing down on their kitchen and bathroom.

Dramatic footage shows the foundation of the structure creaking shortly before it gave way.

Neighbours screamed as debris tumbled onto the street. No one was reported injured.

Homeowner Farida, 42, said she was working at a shop when her home collapsed.

She said: 'I found out from my child. When I was at the shop, I received a call saying the house had collapsed. I went straight home, and it turned out the roof had caved in on the kitchen and bathroom.

'Thank God the children are safe, they were just shocked. Then they immediately ran away.'

The mother-of-two said she had earlier planned to have her home renovated as the foundation was already damaged.

She added that the family will stay in their living room, which remained intact, and will use their neighbour's toilet until they can rebuild their home.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasted heavy rains to batter Central and East Java until September 18.

BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati said: 'The current atmospheric dynamics are triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds that must be anticipated by both the public and local governments.'

The warning came as extreme weather lashed Bali on September 9, in what the National Disaster Mitigation Agency as the island's 'worst hydrometeorological disaster' in a decade.
