TOKYO, JAPAN (SEPT. 18, 2025) (ANADOLU – ACCESS ALL)

1. ATHLETE, YAROSLAVA MAHUCHIKH SPEAKING TO ANADOLU (English) TOKYO, JAPAN - SEPT. 18: Olympic champion and women’s high jump world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh spoke to Anadolu after drawing attention at the 20th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo for resting in a sleeping bag between attempts.

“I know they now call me the ‘sleeping queen’ in Japan,” Mahuchikh said after qualifying for the high jump final.

She explained that she has used blankets during competitions before but this time chose a sleeping bag because of Tokyo’s heat and humidity.

“Now I have a blanket that doesn’t make me too hot or cold, so the weather is no longer a problem,” she said. “I just do this to relax between jumps. Why waste extra energy?”

Mahuchikh, who holds the world record of 2.10 meters, said she first started bringing mats to competitions in 2018 following her coach’s advice to rest properly during events.
