Switzerland: Meeting of Human Rights Council higlights China's poverty reduction experience
A meeting of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland highlighted China's poverty elimination experience on Thursday. The 60th session of the Human Rights Council is underway at the United Nartions office in Geneva, where UN principles and people's well-being are topping the agenda. Members of the Chinese permanent mission to the UN were among the diplomats gathered for discussions on the theme -- "ensuring that all members of society share the fruits of economic and social progress." Representatives of China, the European Union (EU), Mexico, Slovenia and Pakistan all gave speeches at the event. On the same day, the China Society for Human Rights Studies held a conference, featuring talks by members of the delegation on a range of topics, from the need to reform global governance, to barriers to development facing impoverished nations and the gap between the rich and poor. In an interview with China Media Group on the sidelines of the event, Zhang Chaohan, professor of the Foreign-related Rule of Law Research Center under China Northwest University of Political Science and Law, said China has been making headways in human rights protection. "For a long time, China has always adhered to the people-centered concept of human rights and regarded the happy life of the people as the greatest human right. In the process of advancing Chinese-style modernization, China has continuously improved the level of human rights protection and promoted the free and all-round development of human rights," he said. The rights of ethnic minority women in China also came under the spotlight. It was noted that the labor situation for ethnic minority women has been improving and that 40 percent of the working population in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is female.
