China: Relief efforts underway after 5.6-magnitude quake hits Gansu
Relief efforts are in full swing after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Longxi County, Dingxi City, northwest China's Gansu Province on Saturday to help affected residents return to normal life as quickly as possible. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the 5.6-magnitude earthquake occurred at 05:49 on Saturday, with its epicenter in Wenfeng Town, Longxi County, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake was strongly felt in Dingxi City and Tianshui City, with tremors also reported in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture and cities including Pingliang, Longnan, and Lanzhou. Data from the CENC showed that as of 09:00, 47 aftershocks had been recorded in Longxi, including four aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0 or above. After the earthquake, rescue forces from the provincial, municipal, and county levels in Gansu rushed to the disaster area to carry out risk elimination and relief work. The office of the State Council earthquake relief headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management also initiated a level-IV emergency response for earthquakes, and sent a work team to the quake-hit areas to further strengthen the relief efforts. Rescuers from China's national comprehensive fire and rescue teams have arrived at the epicenter, according to the emergency management ministry. The ministry also allocated 200 rescuers and 28 vehicles from the Dingxi and Tianshui fire and rescue forces, and another 26 personnel of specialized rescue teams with seven vehicles. No casualties have been reported, and six people sustain minor injuries, according to the local government. Eight houses have collapsed, and over 110 houses have been damaged. As of now, all injured individuals have been sent to the hospital for treatment. Several trains on the Lanzhou-Lianyungang railway, the Lanzhou-Chongqing railway, and the Baoji-Lanzhou high-speed railway were affected by the earthquake, whose services have currently been restored. In Wenfeng Town's Hualin Village, rescue operations are proceeding in an orderly manner. At the village's tourist service center, tents have been gradually set up to provide shelter for residents. Relief supplies are also arriving progressively. Additionally, local village officials are encouraging residents to relocate to safer areas temporarily. Most of the village roads blocked by landslides triggered by the earthquake have been cleared, with only one section still under emergency repair. Rescue workers are reinforcing tiles on villagers' roofs to prevent them from falling in the event of aftershocks.
