Philippines earthquake topples church as tremors cause widespread damage
An earthquake shook buildings, causing widespread damage when it hit the Philippines this evening.
Footage shows St. Peter and Paul Church on Bantayan Island in Cebu crumbling as the tremors rocked the region in the south of the country at around 10pm local time.
Flames were also seen ripping through the SM Consolacion shopping mall before fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the 6.9 magnitude quake was located 21 kilometres northeast of Bogo City, Cebu, at a depth of five kilometres.
Widespread damage to buildings was reported across the region. PHIVOLCS said aftershocks are expected.
