Philippines earthquake sparks hospital evacuations as tremors rock buildings

An earthquake shook buildings, causing widespread damage when it hit the Philippines this evening.

Footage shows patients being evacuated from a state hospital in Cebu as the tremors rocked the region in the south of the country at around 10pm local time.

Flames were also seen ripping through the SM Consolacion shopping mall before fire crews extinguished the blaze. While a church also crumbled as onlookers fled.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the 6.9 magnitude quake was located 21 kilometres northeast of Bogo City, Cebu, at a depth of five kilometres.

Widespread damage to buildings was reported across the region. PHIVOLCS said aftershocks are expected.
