Bangkok sinkhole secured with pumps and sandbags to stop floods
The giant sinkhole in Bangkok was secured with water pumps and sandbags to stop the floods.
Authorities installed the equipment on Friday as forecasters warned of heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Bualoi.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said more than 50,000 sandbags and some 2,400 tonnes of concrete had been poured to seal the sinkhole and prevent further subsidence.
He said: 'Even though the Meteorological Department is forecasting more rain, we're confident there will be no backflow into the hole. The contractor will handle pumping out the remaining water.
'Inspections showed that the soil inside the hole has become more stable and surrounding buildings remain secure. Motion measurement equipment were used to scan Samsen Road and there were no new irregularities. The cracks found were old ones from the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority.'
The official added that the recently reopened Vajira Hospital near the sinkhole was serving 1,200 outpatients, with 'all systems functioning properly'.
He urged locals to refrain from entering the affected area to reduce congestion.
The road collapsed on the morning of September 24 due to the botched construction of an underground train line and a burst water pipe.
Miraculously, nobody is believed to have been injured. However, officials said 'two or three' police vehicles had been lost in the sinkhole.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart said recent construction from an underground train for the city's MRT purple line may have contributed to the collapse.
Police Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the area was undergoing roadworks at the time of the collapse.
Officers said a damaged water pipe could have further caused the earth to weaken.
