China: Return trips surge as National Day holiday nears end
Storyline: China's transportation network is bracing for a nationwide surge in return traffic on Tuesday, day seven of this year's eight-day National Day holiday. The country's railway network is expected to handle more than 19 million passenger trips, according to official estimates. More than 1,880 additional trains have been deployed to accommodate the travel rush across the nation. Beijing Railway Station and Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station are expected to handle 170,000 traveler trips on the day, more than twice as many as usual. Meanwhile, peak hours for nationwide road traffic are expected to last from 10:00 to 16:00. In Nanping City of east China's Fujian Province, coach bus stations have arranged special routes to send passengers directly to railway stations. "We have deployed 20 additional buses and another eight emergency vehicles at terminals of the routes connecting the high-speed rail station to ensure rapid response and timely evacuation," said Bai Yanfang, director of a coach bus station in Nanping. Forecasts show that than 1.1 million passenger trips are expected at ferry terminals nationwide, a year-on-year increase of nearly 22 percent. Meanwhile, the country's airlines will handle about 2.4 million air passenger trips on the day, growing 3.6 percent from the same period of the past year. Shotlist: China - Recent: 1.
