At 2:54 p.m. on October 5, during the National Day holiday, a rockfall occurred about 300 metres west of the viewing platform at the Quanpu Gorge in Yuntai Mountain, a 5A-rated scenic area in Jiaozuo, Henan Province. A large number of rocks tumbled down the mountainside, raising thick clouds of dust as tourists fled the area in panic to take cover.

The scenic area promptly issued a statement the same day, clarifying that the rockfall occurred in a section that was not open to the public and that no injuries were reported. The incident was attributed to recent continuous heavy rainfall, which loosened the mountain’s structure and increased the risk of natural disasters such as falling rocks.

Due to the excessive water flow in the gorge, the scenic area announced the temporary closure of Quanpu Gorge starting October 6 to ensure visitor safety, with reopening dates yet to be determined.

Located in Xiuwu County, Jiaozuo, Henan, Yuntai Mountain Scenic Area is recognized as one of the world’s first UNESCO Global Geoparks, a national scenic area, and one of China’s first 5A-level tourist attractions.

No one was injured in the incident.
