Locals protested against a proposed US military base in southern Thailand, as the superpower battles to counter the influence of China in the region.

Residents gathered outside the Phang Nga provincial hall on Wednesday to oppose the rumoured request of 'Uncle Sam' to use the Phang Nga naval Base.

Footage shows protesters holding up placards in both Thai and English declaring: 'We don't want a US military base.'

The rally was led by Dusit Boothong of the Phang Nga Happiness Civil Society Association and Siriphong Konsap, deputy chief executive of the Pha Ko Sub-district Administrative Organisation.

Dusit said locals feared the alleged American military installation could affect the province's security, environment, and tourism-dependent economy.

He added: ‘The citizens of Phang Nga province wish to continue living their normal lives, remain committed to peace, and uphold the security and benefit of the nation.

'Countries hosting foreign military bases often do not see economic benefits but they face risks of becoming targets for opposing nations. Even though the plan is unconfirmed, residents weare re concerned because the government has not addressed the rumours.'

The group has submitted a letter addressed to Deputy Governor Bancha Thanu-in, urging him to reject foreign military presence in the area.

In July, three Thai cabinet ministers denied that the US demanded to use the Phang Nga Naval base as part of tariff negotiations.

Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai had dismissed the rumours, saying he never discussed such an issue with the US.

General Nattapol Nakpanit, Deputy Minister of Defence, said the request was not part of the terms proposed by the US during talks.

Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has also dismissed the reports as speculation.
