An abandoned baby girl was found in a cardboard box in a quiet village in Indonesia.

The newborn, believed to be just three days old, was discovered wrapped in cloth and nestled in a box left outside a home in Taba Tebelet Village, Bengkulu Province, on Monday morning.

Villagers heard faint cries at around 6:30 am local time and were shocked to find the live infant abandoned outdoors.

Footage shows the foundling bundled in blankets and wearing a purple hat as residents crowded around it.

Police said the girl was immediately taken to the hospital for a check-up, adding she is now in stable condition.

First Inspector Dedi, head the Women's and Children's Empowerment Unit of the Kepahiang Police, said: 'Not a single piece of identification or message was found in the cardboard box with the baby. The baby has physical characteristics such as a birthmark on her ear and a bottle of milk. We are still investigating.'

Under Article 305 of Indonesia's Criminal Code, abandoning a child under seven years old is punishable with up to five years and six months in prison. If it causes injury or death, the penalty is raised to seven and a half or nine years respectively.
