North Port, United States - October 04, 2025 A North Port police sergeant acted swiftly to save a small child who narrowly avoided being hit by a car on U.S. 41. According to the police, the child, who has developmental delays, had wandered from home despite safety devices meant to prevent such incidents. “The child, who has developmental delays, wandered from their home that night, despite having safety devices in place to prevent something like this from happening,” the department said. Body camera footage shows the sergeant spotting the child running along the road and immediately turning his patrol vehicle around. As the child enters the street, a car almost strikes them. The officer honks to alert the driver before pulling over. “I’ve got a small child running down the road in front of Lowe’s. Just almost got hit by a car,” the officer says in the footage. The video then captures the sergeant chasing the child safely to the side of the road, preventing what could have been a serious accident. “We’re incredibly thankful that the child was safe,” a North Port Police Department spokesperson said.
