GRANT COUNTY, N.M. — A New Mexico State Police officer is being praised for his bravery after rescuing a woman, a child and their dog from swift floodwaters Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 3:09 p.m. Aug. 31 on Stephens Road near Buckhorn, where flooding overturned a vehicle with the trio trapped on top. Officer Walker Eby worked alongside the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Cliff Volunteer Fire Department and local residents to develop a rescue plan.

Using a backhoe to stabilize the vehicle, responders placed a ladder across the rushing water. Eby removed his gear, crossed the ladder and carried the 6-year-old child to safety. He then returned to assist the woman with a safety rope and later pulled the dog across to shore.

Officials credited the coordinated effort with preventing tragedy, commending Eby’s courage and the teamwork of first responders and residents.
