Starmer Seeks Changes To How International Law Is Used In Asylum Cases. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said he wants to change how international law is interpreted in asylum cases to prevent unsuccessful applicants from blocking deportation on the grounds of poorer prison or healthcare conditions abroad. Speaking to the BBC, Starmer stressed he does not want to “tear down” human rights laws but suggested a fresh look at Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects against torture and degrading treatment. He said mass migration in recent years has created new challenges, while insisting that those genuinely fleeing persecution should still be granted asylum. On Radio 4, he gave the example of a Brazilian paedophile who claimed he would face worse treatment in Brazil than in UK prisons. Starmer said there is a difference between deporting someone to “summary execution” and sending them to a country with different healthcare or prison standards. He concluded that the laws must be applied in today’s context, and that a compassionate approach should continue to protect genuine refugees.
