The biggest ever police raid on drug cartels in Rio de Janeiro has left dozens dead.

Police in Brazil opened fire on the gangs across two favelas in the city on Tuesday afternoon. Cartles returned fire and used drones to drop explosives on officers.

At least 64 people, including four police officers, were killed in the carnage, just days before the city hosts events for the United Nations climate summit COP30.

Rio Governor Claudio Castro confirmed that it was the city's deadliest operation and involved 2,500 security personnel.

He said there were 81 arrests along with a further 250 arrests and search warrants served on suspects.
