This is the terrifying moment a tornado blitzed homes leaving six dead and hundreds injured in Brazil.

Footage shows howling winds tearing through houses in the southern state of Parana on November 7 evening.

The twister hit speeds of up to 250 kph (155 mph) as it struck Rio Bonito do Iguacu town which is home to 14,000 people.

Officials said around 90 per cent of the town was destroyed, triggering an emergency declaration in the region.

Authorities said six people, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed and at least 750 were injured. One individual was missing, with the count expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the affected families on X.

He said: 'A team led by Minister Gleisi Hoffmann, composed of the Ministries of Health and Regional Integration and Development, is heading to the region. National Civil Defense technicians specialized in humanitarian aid and reconstruction are already on their way to the cities, and professionals from the National SUS Force will provide assistance to the population and to the Parana state government teams involved in the rescue and aid to the victims.

'We will continue supporting the Parana population. And providing all the necessary assistance.'
