Thailand deports hundreds more 'Indian scammers' fleeing compounds hit by crackdown in Myanmar
Thailand deported hundreds more Indians fleeing from scam compounds hit by a crackdown in Myanmar.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul oversaw the repatriation of 195 Indian suspected scam workers at the Mae Sot International Airport in Tak, northern Thailand, on Monday.
The group is the second batch to be deported after 270 were collected by Indian army planes on November 6.
Officials said the Indian nationals were taken to the airport in a convoy of buses before returning to their home country in a C-130 aircraft.
The Thai premier said deportation was necessary as accommodating them would financially strain Thailand.
He added: 'Diplomatic cooperation has been strong and the governments involved have agreed to repatriate their countrymen.'
Thai authorities said they were planning to implement biometric screening to prevent Thailand from being used as a transit point for scam operations.
The Burmese military raided the KK Park fraud compound in Myawaddy, infamous for being a centre for transnational scam operations, on October 22.
Since the raid, authorities have freed some 1,598 foreign nationals, many of whom were tricked or coerced into running online scams targeting victims around the world.
The Burmese junta has launched a bombing campaign to demolish dozens of suspected fraud centres in the complex.
Myanmar is teeming with fraud centres, which are a key part of its black market, along with drug production and illegal mining.
The criminal operations are often run by Chinese-led syndicates thriving in the lawless Golden Triangle region, where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet.
