HM Coastguard Leads Urgent Rescues as Life-Threatening Flooding Hits Skenfrith, South Wales
Video shows Emergency crews rushed to Skenfrith today as severe flooding created a major danger to life, with river levels rising rapidly and heavy rain continuing to batter the area.
An amber weather warning for rain remains in force, with forecasters predicting 100–150mm of rainfall across the region. The intense downpours have already caused significant surface flooding and pushed river levels towards historic peaks.
Members of UK Weather Chase, already monitoring conditions in the town, closed affected roads earlier in the day as water began to encroach on residential areas.
“Vehicles were driving through the flooding, causing wave impacts that were putting vulnerable properties at further risk, so we decided to close the road to prevent any additional issues,” said Sam from UK Weather Chase.
As conditions deteriorated, UK Weather Chase requested support from HM Coastguard, who arrived shortly after to assist with rescue and evacuation efforts. Emergency responders are now carrying out active rescues, helping residents trapped by rising water and moving people to safety.
Authorities report a significant risk to life, with deep, fast-flowing floodwater presenting hazardous conditions for residents and responders alike. Homes are expected to be affected, and widespread disruption to the community is likely to continue.
Further heavy rainfall is forecast over the next six hours, and peak river levels at Skenfrith are expected to approach those seen during the October 2019 floods and Storm Dennis in February 2020.
Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation closely as the response effort continues.
