US: Suspect Uses Stolen Forklift To Ram And Drag ATM Through Tallahassee
Tallahassee, United States - November 17, 2025 A man was arrested early Monday, Nov. 17, after police say he stole a forklift and used it to ram and drag an ATM down a Tallahassee street during a slow predawn getaway attempt. Officers identified the suspect as 38-year-old Joshua Hidalgo. He faces multiple charges, including grand theft, burglary of a structure, criminal mischief, resisting an officer, trespassing on school grounds, and possession of burglary tools. He is being held in the Leon County Detention Facility. Witnesses reported seeing Hidalgo a little after 5 a.m. driving the forklift with the ATM and later pushing the machine after it toppled onto the pavement. “He was operating the forklift and fled on foot when officers attempted to stop him,” said Tallahassee Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Hill. “He was captured after a brief foot pursuit and taken into custody without incident.” Miles Robertson and his wife Madi were awakened in their Birmingham Street home by commotion outside, followed by a loud crashing sound. They looked outside and saw a man in an orange hoodie struggling with something attached to a concrete slab that had fallen into the road. “It was so bizarre,” Robertson said, adding that the man’s calm behavior made him question what he was seeing. The moment the man rammed the ATM with the forklift and began pushing it down the street, the Robertsons realized what was happening and called police. The forklift carved a gouged trail through the pavement as it moved. According to Robertson, the suspect continued until reaching Alabama Street. Officers caught up with him in the 600 block of West Tennessee Street, where both the forklift and the ATM were recovered. “Where both of those came from remains under investigation,” Hill said. The Robertsons’ doorbell camera captured footage of the forklift creeping down the street and the ATM falling with a loud crash. Another video posted online showed the ATM and what appeared to be cash scattered near Joe Louis and Arizona streets. “I prefer this kind of crime over violent ones,” Robertson said in a text, “but I think the guy was lucky that OSHA wasn’t around to see his blatant disregard of workplace safety.”
