A rescued baby elephant suffered stomach problems as she continues to fight for her life at a hospital in Thailand.

The female calf named Khao Tom was found alone, having been left by her mother in the Lam Khlong Ngu National Park in Kanchanburi province, in September.

She is recovering at a wildlife care centre in Suphanburi province as she suffers from serious internal complications, including liver fibrosis and an enlarged heart.

Veterinarians said on Wednesday that though Khao Tom was drinking milk and rice water, her appetite was still weaker than normal. Her stools were also 'liquid with a small amount of creamy substance'.

Doctors continued to administer IV fluids, painkillers, supplements, and antibiotics as they maintained round-the-clock care for the abandoned calf.

Natthanon Panphet, a specialist veterinarian and head of the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary, said: 'Veterinarians are continuing to treat wounds and pressure sores on the skin, including cleaning, spraying, and applying wound dressings.

'Khao Tom's condition remains under daily assessment. A team of veterinarians, animal husbandry officers, and forest rangers provide 24-hour care.

'The veterinary team remains concerned about the ongoing digestive system issues and concerns about the animal's lower milk intake than normal.'

Locals found Khao Tom bleeding and in agony on the forest floor, just a day after her birth in September. Rangers transported the fragile calf to the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary, where she is currently recovering.

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
