Tornado tears through neighbourhood during storm in Texas
A tornado tore through a neighbourhood during a storm in Texas.
Footage shows the vertical cloud swirling in the sky in Spring on Monday, November 24.
The filmer said: 'Porch lights flickered in gusty winds and distant thunder. I saw branches and patio furniture hurling in the wind. It was surreal looking out your doorstep and seeing flying debris.'
The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston confirmed that it was an EF1 tornado with estimated winds of 95 mph that briefly touched down in the area during a line of severe thunderstorms, which triggered tornado warnings across southeast Texas.
Local media reported that the vortex remained on the ground for about two minutes, cutting a narrow path roughly 0.3 miles long and 50 yards wide.
The tornado reportedly caused minor structural damage to several homes in the Gleannloch Farms subdivision.
NWS survey teams arrived Tuesday morning and documented snapped large tree limbs, shingle damage on several roofs, and a detached carport thrown into a nearby fence, findings consistent with EF1 tornado damage.
Forecasters said the storm system was driven by a cold front colliding with warm Gulf moisture. The same line of storms also produced hail up to quarter-size in nearby areas and flash flooding along I-45.
A tornado forms when warm, moist air meets cool, dry air during severe storms, creating a spinning funnel that becomes a tornado once it touches the ground.
Often linked to violent storms like supercells, tornadoes can cause severe damage alongside heavy rain, strong winds, thunder, and lightning.
