England to Introduce Nationwide Tourist Tax on Overnight Stays. The UK government announces a new visitor levy allowing mayors across England to impose a “modest” tax on overnight hotel, B&B, guest house and holiday-let stays. Communities Secretary Steve Reed says the revenue will go toward improving local transport, infrastructure and the wider visitor economy. Regional Labour leaders, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Greater Manchester’s Andy Burnham, have long pushed for the measure. Hospitality groups condemn the levy as “damaging,” warning it could burden businesses already under pressure. The new tax aligns England with Scotland and Wales, which are introducing similar charges, as well as major global destinations like New York, Paris and Milan. Officials cite research showing that reasonable tourist fees have only a “minimal” impact on visitor numbers. Khan says the levy is “great news for London,” estimating it could raise up to £240m depending on the rate applied. Burnham says the revenue will help fund cleaner streets, later-running public transport and better services to enhance the visitor experience.
