DELI SERDANG, INDONESIA - NOVEMBER 27, 2025: Days of relentless heavy rain have triggered severe flooding and landslides across several regions in North Sumatra Province, causing widespread damage and significant casualties.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), at least five regencies have been heavily affected, including Humbang Hasundutan, Deli Serdang, Pakpak Barat, and Tapanuli Tengah. Numerous roads have been cut off, hundreds of houses damaged, and public facilities inundated.
The North Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumut) reported that the death toll continues to rise. As of Thursday (Nov. 27), 43 people have been confirmed dead. Furthermore, 81 individuals were injured, and 88 others remain missing, prompting intensified search efforts by joint rescue teams from the police, military, Basarnas, and local volunteers.
Rescue operations are being carried out through ground searches and river patrols using rubber boats. Authorities said the challenging terrain, strong currents, and unstable soil conditions have slowed down the evacuation process.
Officials have urged residents living near riverbanks and landslide-prone areas to remain alert, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. Local governments have begun setting up emergency shelters and distributing aid to affected families.
Heavy rainfall and flooding also damaged 330 houses and displaced 2,244 people in several areas, according to local authorities.
In neighboring Malaysia, authorities reported on Wednesday that 21,834 people have been displaced by ongoing flooding in several northern states.
