US: Construction Worker Rescued After 30-Foot Fall Into New York City Manhole
New York, United States - November 20, 2025 Dramatic footage shows the rescue of a construction worker who plunged 30 feet into a manhole in New York City. According to an NYPD spokesperson, the 35-year-old construction worker fell into an open manhole near West 170th Street in Washington Heights at around 8:45 a.m. on November 20. The spokesperson shared the details with The Independent on Friday. Bodycam video released by the NYPD shows Emergency Service Unit officers securing the area before lowering at least one officer and a New York City firefighter down the manhole. As the officer prepares to be lowered, someone in the footage notes that the metal rungs on the side, meant to help with climbing down, have rotted away, making the descent more difficult. The video also shows first responders in reflective vests coordinating how to lower equipment into the manhole to reach the worker, who is 30 feet below. “You’re alright. He’s alright,” an officer can be heard saying as the team lifts the injured man, strapped to a backboard, up to the surface. EMS transported the construction worker to New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition, the NYPD spokesperson said.
