China: Ornamental fish market going swimmingly in northeast China
Storyline: Ornamental fish market going swimmingly in northeast China [Voice_over] In northeast China's Liaoyang City, local ornamental fish breeders are reeling in strong profits on heavy demand from consumers. The fish farmers leverage greenhouse facilities and heating systems to maintain optimal breeding conditions during winter, supplying the market during southern China's low-production season. One breeder says he can sell 10,000 to 20,000 ornamental fish per day, with peak seasons pushing that number even higher. [Sound_bite] Zhang Ren, Ornamental fish breeder: "On average, we sell between 10,000 and 20,000 fish per day. During peak seasons, like around the Chinese New Year, that number can reach 40,000 to 50,000 daily." [Voice_over] With strong consumer demand, the industry has become a significant source of income for local households. [Sound_bite] Shi Changcun, Village director, Lujia Village, Liaoyang County, Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province: "Villagers involved in ornamental fish farming typically earn 30,000 to 60,000 U.S. dollars a year. About one-third of the village - around 200 households - are now engaged in this business." [Voice_over] To date, more than 70 varieties of ornamental fish are bred in Liaoyang City, with an annual output value reaching nearly 50 million U.S. dollars.
