Hardworking Red-backed Fairywren parents rarely rest in their quest to feed their hungry chicks.

Beautiful Red-backed Fairywrens (Malurus melanocephalus ) are found across northern Australia, through eastern Queensland and into north-eastern New South Wales. They form monogamous pairs for the purpose of raising young, but there is also a high incidence of mating outside the pair bond. This is thought to aid the genetic diversity of the clutch. The female alone builds the concealed nest – a domed structure made of fibrous grasses, rootlets and strips of bark, sometimes bound together with spider webs, then broods the eggs for 12-13 days. The male and other sometimes helper Fairywrens (often the previous years’ young) contribute to feeding the nestlings. This pair of Red-backed Fairywrens were arriving every two or three minutes with food for their nestlings, dropping from the perch above the nest that was concealed in rank grass. The nestlings fledge 11-12 days after hatching.
