Hard-working Grebe parents struggle to keep up with the voracious appetites of their chicks.

Several pairs of Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus) bred in Herdsman Lake during October and November 2021. One pair was particularly confiding, allowing close observation from a boardwalk just next to them. The parent Grebes were hunting for Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), feeding them to their two large chicks. The Grebe parents struggled to keep up with the appetites of their voracious chicks.
