Storyline: Worth repeating: parrots capture zeitgeist in China [Voice_over] Colorful and cute, parrots are fast becoming a trend in China's Heilongjiang Province. From pets to café attractions, the birds are everywhere in the region's capital Harbin. Cafés invite patrons to mingle with the birds, which are raised completely in captivity, so they're used to interacting with humans. [Sound_bite] Consumer: "It climbed onto my snood and played with me. So, this makes me pleasure and relax." [Voice_over] Many of the parrots are bred at nearby farms like this one in which tens of thousands of breeding parrots roost freely. Even still, sometimes favorite breeds are sold out. [Sound_bite] Buyer: "That's incredible. Parrots are becoming best sellers." [Voice_over] Parrot prices vary based on a bird's age and breed, ranging from 14 U.S. dollars to 1,400. [Sound_bite] Tian Chunyu, parrot farmer: "Annually, these parrots are worth an estimated 564,000 U.S. dollars. The buyers are from such as pet stores, online shops and bird cafes, across the country." [Voice_over] Data shows that there are 191 parrot related companies in the province, covering every step of the industrial chain from research to breeding to ecological protection.
