Footage shows water jostling around in an aquarium as a magnitude 6.7 earthquake rattled homes in Hokkaido, Japan, today.

Resident Hazuki said: 'The earthquake alarm sounded, so I turned off the circuit breaker, closed the gas main valve, and lowered the water level in the aquarium.'

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor hit 114km (71 miles) off the coast of Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 am local time, at a depth of 10.7km (6.6 miles).

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a possible tsunami that could hit Hokkaido, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures.

The quake comes just days after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that injured at least 50 people in the same region on December 8.

Japan is highly prone to quakes and volcanic eruptions as it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active area where multiple tectonic plates collide.
