GAZA, PALESTINE - DECEMBER 17, 2025: Palestinian children and young people who were injured and left with limb loss during Israel’s genocide in Gaza are seeking treatment at the Medical Rehabilitation Hospital run by the Palestine Red Crescent Society, despite severe shortages of equipment, staff and medical supplies.

In the besieged Gaza Strip, where the health system has been deliberately and extensively damaged by Israel, rehabilitation centers remain overwhelmed. Thousands of Palestinians wounded during the genocide face prolonged delays and serious obstacles in their recovery due to Israel’s blockade, which has severely restricted the entry of humanitarian and medical aid into the enclave.

At the hospital in Khan Younis, Dr Tareq al-Hifni, the facility’s director, said about 100 patients are currently receiving treatment, while thousands more across Gaza remain on waiting lists for rehabilitation.

Al Hifni said the continued closure of border crossings has prevented many patients from seeking treatment abroad, worsening their medical conditions and placing growing strain on an already devastated healthcare system. He warned that delays in rehabilitation significantly increase the risk of permanent disability.

Among the patients is a Palestinian child who was injured in Israeli attacks and left partially paralyzed after waiting months to begin rehabilitation, his mother said.

“My son’s biggest dream is to walk again,” she said. “The treatment here has helped his psychological state somewhat, but resources are extremely limited, and we hope he can receive treatment abroad.”

Earlier this month, Gaza’s Health Ministry said about 6,000 people who have lost limbs as a result of Israel’s brutal war urgently need long-term rehabilitation, warning of severe and lasting humanitarian consequences for thousands of families.

In September, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UNRWA, said Gaza has become home to the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world since the start of the Israeli war.

Israel has killed more than 70,600 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,100 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023, which have continued despite the truce.
