This is the heartwarming moment a police officer rescued a dog from a frozen lake in New Jersey.

Footage shows Patrolman Michael Poon struggling across the ice on Lake Mohawk near Rainbow Trail as he reaches the distressed canine on December 17.

Moments later, the pooch is pulled from the freezing water as the officer holds onto a safety rope secured by a colleague.

The Sparta Township Police Department said in a statement: 'We would like to recognise Patrolman Michael Poon for his outstanding bravery and professionalism during an ice rescue on Lake Mohawk near Rainbow Trail.

'Certified in ice rescue and using the department's specialist equipment, Ptl. Poon crawled onto the ice to reach a dog that had fallen through. Without hesitation, he entered the icy water and pushed the dog back onto the ice, ensuring it reached dry land safely.

'We are incredibly grateful for Ptl. Poon's courage and dedication, and we also thank the concerned citizens who immediately contacted us to report the dog in distress. Their quick action truly made a difference.'
