Rescue teams are searching for survivors after a disaster at a landfill site in the Philippines.

The Philippine Coast Guard K9 Force Central Visayas was deployed after a mountain of rubbish collapsed at the Prime Waste Solutions landfill in Binaliw Village, Cebu, on January 8.

Footage shows an emergency responder and a canine combing through the debris in search of trapped workers.

Reports said around 50 sanitation workers were buried when tonnes of waste fell from an estimated height of 20 storeys at the privately operated landfill, which serves a city of nearly one million people.

Local officials confirmed eight fatalities as of Monday morning, with dozens still missing.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said: 'The 72 hours lapsed already, but we're hoping we still have people who are alive, so that's why we continue to be on this rescue operation.

'We will be deciding this afternoon if we continue the rescue mode or retrieval mode this afternoon.'

Twelve workers have been rescued alive and taken to the hospital.
