Landslide leaves Sicilian town teetering on the edge of a cliff
Credit: Vigili del Fuoco/Cover Images A 2.5-mile (4km) stretch of cliff has collapsed on the Italian island of Sicily after being battered by strong winds and heavy rain brought by Storm Harry last week. More than 1,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes in the town of Niscemi, as engineers and geologists carry out surveys to assess the stability of the area. There have been no reports of deaths or injuries. However, aerial footage released by the authorities shows widespread damage, with several buildings and vehicles destroyed by the landslide. The collapse began on Sunday, with parts of the cliff continuing to crumble into Monday, according to local media reports. Firefighters have been responding in the area for the past 48 hours, particularly in the Santa Croci neighbourhood and the Pirillo district. As a precaution, nearby roads, including the SP10 and SP12, have been closed to traffic. An air force helicopter based in Catania carried out an aerial reconnaissance flight on Tuesday morning - where this footage comes from - while monitoring and recovery operations continue at evacuated properties.
