Alpine conditions in Lake District

Buy video

Video of stunning alpine-like conditions across the Lake District, Cumbria, UK on Friday 16th Jan as weather forced walkers to use special equipment and covered mountains in snow.

The filmer later wrote online:

"The higher fells got a considerable amount of snow and there was deep fresh snow down to 200m in places today. The hardy native sheep, called Herdwicks still managed to forage for their food.

"The snow covering the Langdales (seen here in the video) ranged in depth from 5cm to 1.5m higher up in the drifts. Much of the snow is now hardening into good solid neve, but in sheltered drifts there is a layer of soft powder and graupel (hail) overlying the harder stuff.

"Paths at all levels have snow and ice covering them and the high fells require extreme caution and the use of ice axe and crampons."
