A mad bird with a weird call - the Black bellied Bustard

The Black-bellied Bustard (Lissotis melanogaster) is a large, beautiful ground-living bird found in sub-Saharan Africa. Only the male has the black breast and belly that give this bird its name.

The courtship display of the male is truly extraordinary – he usually droops his black and white wings, retracts his head, makes a croaking ‘waak’ and then raises his head again ending his call sequence with a loud pop!
