Toxic, blister-making CMR Beetle eating a flower

Buy video

CMR Beetles (Mylabris oculata) are named after the South African Cape Mounted Riflemen whose uniform sported similar black and yellow bands. CMR Beetles belong the Blister Beetle family Meloidae, and their bright colours provide a warning to the unwary – they secrete the toxic chemical cantharidin when alarmed and this causes severe burning and blistering of the skin. CMR Beetles are considered pests, and eat the petals of flowers, particularly yellow ones. This beetle is eating a flower on a Caltrop (Tribulus terrestris) – a plant that produces thorny fruits called devil’s horns.
