An elephant calf was found roaming near Munnar in Kerala after separating from its herd.

Eyewitnesses said the baby elephant was not in distress and roamed around the town freely.

It was friendly with people and drew a curious crowd.

Local forest officials reached the spot and shifted the baby elephant to a rescue centre and gave it liquid food.

A forest officer Nibu Kiran said the calf may have got separated from two elephant herds, which were roaming in the area.

“If the calf doesn't return to the forest, we will shift it to an elephant care shelter," he added.

Elephant rights activist Rajeev Kurup said the incidents of elephant calves separating from the herds were increasing. “The forest department lacks the expertise to reunite calves with their herds,” he added.

He pointed out that elephant care shelters were not sanctuaries but training centres where the calves will undergo rigorous training to be useful in processions, temples and logging industry, which he claims may lead to a life of slavery for the calf.
