A wild elephant that got separated from its herd and strayed into an inhabited area was seen gleefully walking around a market in northeastern India.

The incident took place near the Narengi market of Guwahati, Assam on March 6, at 9:00am.

Footage from the scene shows the elephant walking inside the market premises, looking for food.

Later it visited a residential area to hunt for more food, causing local people offered the stray animal some bananas and other edibles.

Reportedly the wayward animal was very friendly and did not harm anybody.

Forest department officials were informed about the presence of the elephant in the area, and dispatched a team to the site.

The team were able to safely rescue the elephant, and took it back to Amchang forest reserve.
