Lionesses guarding their kill from scavengers – then one settles back to eat more

Buy video

These two lionesses had killed and eaten a half-grown Zebra near the Klopperfontein waterhole in northern Kruger Park. They were full but lay near the Zebra carcass under the shade of Mopane shrubs preventing two Hyaenas and three Black-backed Jackals from eating the remains. The scavengers waited patiently for the Lions to leave, but they didn’t, one of them returning a few times to chew on the scant remains of the young Zebra and standing up, looking at the scavengers and keeping them at bay. The lioness stood watching the Hyaenas and Black-backed Jackals nearby in case they made a dash towards her to steal her kill. When she was satisfied that the risk had subsided she lay down and began eating again while her companion moved behind her and defaecated.
