Male giraffes attack each other with explosive blows using their heads

Buy video

The video shows one of the most fascinating and unique animal fighting styles in the African bush. Two equally sized male giraffes dealing out explosive blows to one another using their bony heads and horns. It was during a safari in the Kruger National park when we came across two male giraffes locked in a ritual battle called necking. Necking rituals are synchronised and at times seem like a graceful dance but the ultimate intention is for one bull to thrust his neck sideways making well placed blows with his horns and knobbly head on the opponent’s body while they stand side on, head to rump. We could very clearly hear the explosive sounds of the impact on the bodies of the giraffes. These two males were relentless and each hit with the head and horns was at full force. It looked and sounded extremely painful. Male giraffes fight through their lifetime with other males to establish a local status hierarchy and compete with other bull giraffes to mate with a female. It was a really fascinating experience to see how the world’s tallest mammal goes about sorting its differences.
